About
The Short Version
I’m a scientist, builder, and facilitator based in Japan, working at the intersection of conservation, technology, and community. I have a background in ecology and geography, with peer-reviewed research published in Science and Nature Communications. I build tools that help people understand spatial data, whether that’s mapping extinction risk for sharks and rays, planning community conservation, or creating 3D platforms for civic engagement.
My Background
I’ve worked across academia, government, and startups, building spatial data tools for conservation, environmental planning, and community engagement. What ties it all together is a focus on turning complex geospatial information into something people can actually use.
Research. Co-authored global shark and ray extinction risk assessments in Science, Nature Communications, PNAS, and Current Biology as part of the Dulvy Lab. Currently conducting zonation analysis and building a web map app for the Bowen Island Community Plan with the Palen Lab at SFU.
Government. Marine spatial planning for Canada’s Pacific coast at Fisheries and Oceans Canada: fisheries data analysis, stakeholder engagement tools, and contributions to the MSP Web Atlas.
Startups & Client Work. Co-founded Above Atlantis (Aquahacking BC 2020 finalist, $10,000 award), which grew into my Master’s thesis on extended reality systems ($135,000 Mitacs funding). Built full-stack SDM pipelines, habitat classification, and a deployed R Shiny dashboard for OceanOS (Innovate UK-funded).
Hackathons. Runner-up at Hack the Climate (WindEurope 2024). Mayor’s Award at Hackatsuon 2025 for KesenMemento.
What I Work With

- Species distribution modelling & habitat classification
- Spatial analysis & GIS (PostGIS, ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Conservation planning (zonation analysis)
- Scientific communication & publication
Development & Design

- Cloud deployment (Docker, DigitalOcean, CI/CD)
- ETL pipeline design (DuckDB, Arrow)
- 3D & XR (Unity, Cesium.js, LiDAR, ROS)
- Project management
- Bilingual communication (EN/JP)
What I’m Looking For
I’m open to collaborations that sit at the intersection of spatial data, ecology, and technology, especially projects that involve:
- Conservation & spatial planning: zonation analysis, species risk assessment, marine spatial planning, fisheries data
- Machine learning & responsible AI: species distribution modelling, habitat classification, and thoughtful, responsible integration of AI into research and tooling
- Geospatial web applications & data visualization: interactive maps, data dashboards, and planning tools that turn complex spatial findings into clear, compelling stories for communities and organizations
- Civic tech & community platforms: tools that empower local communities, particularly in rural Japan
If any of that resonates, I’d love to hear from you.
